Oil Painting Mediums

Painting mediums can be used in conjunction with oils to produce anything from glowingly thin glazes to matte textural impastos. Linseed mediums are an old standard - they will slow the drying time of paints and increase flluidity. Alkyd mediums (Gamblin's Galkyds, M.Graham's Walnut Alkyd, Liquin) are modern counterparts to stand oil. They are also excellent for creating enamel-like glazes, yet will speed paint drying time.

Gamblin's Cold Wax can be used to create areas of matte finish and thickened texture. Cold Wax can also be added to alkyd medium as a matting agent, or disolved in mineral spirits.
