Mount Vision Handmade Pastels Click on the photo of each color below to view a larger picture and pricing. These pastels are made by Karl Kelly, who draws upon his experience as a oil paint maker to bring pastels to a brand new level. Karl has spent years researching traditional pigments and advances in synthetic color technology to develop a new line of high quality, handmade soft pastels. Heavily pigmented and using a combination of marble dust, chalk, and clay, all of the pastels have a wonderfully smooth and creamy fee. Each pastel is hand rolled and allowed to air dry, creating a unique feel for each one. The Mount Vision Pastel Company brings out each color's best qualities while honoring their fundamental nature. As a small, artist-owned company, the Mount Vision Pastel Company guarantees each pastel is made by artists who use and understand the products themselves. We asked local pastelist and portrait artist Sari Gaby if we should carry the Mount Vision line, and her face immediately lit up. "Oh, YES!" she said enthusiastically. "They are a wonderful, professional quality pastel. They fall between Unison and Schmincke in softness, and their colors are just fantastic. Plus the size of the sticks makes them very economical." Mount Vision colors have a wonderful, soft, almost "buttery" feel, the pigment goes down with little resistance and allows the pastelist to build up of several layers of color. The "feel" of the pastel, how the pigment releases to the paper, is dependent on the pigment and the base it is mixed with. Karl has made countless test samples of each color trying to find the best combination of pigments, chalks, and binders for each color produced. In developing his colors, Karl has relied on the look of colors in nature as well as the artistic uses of color in the medium. This line is under constant development, there are currently 200 colors available with many more to come.
