Japanese Chiyogami Paper- Pansies in Pink and Red Shades 18"x24" Sheet
These
wonderfully decorative patterns on paper, known as Chiyogami, are
silkscreened onto machine made sheets of mixed kozo and sulphite. They
are more popularly known as Yuzen in the United States.
Originally,
Chiyogami designs were developed in the Edo period as woodblock prints
by papermakers during the farming season for use as accessories in the
house to enliven the interiors. They were based on the bright kimono
textiles which the papermakers from the countryside saw on the
fashionable wealthier ladies in the larger cities, especially in Kyoto,
where the area known as Yuzen had become famous for its sophisticated
techniques for dyeing cloth.
Chiyogami
was meant to be cut into pieces and made into paper dolls or pasted on
tea tins or small paper boxes; still today the scale of the patterns is
reminiscent of these early uses. And still many of the symbols depicted
hearken back to auspicious occasions when fancy kimonos would be worn:
cranes for long life; bamboo for flexibility; plum blossoms and pine
boughs for beauty and longevity.

Great American Pastels - Assorted Color Set - 18 Handmade Soft Pastels
Great American Art Works began production of its pastels 10 years ago. The owner of the business is a chemist, and his initial research into pastel production focused on the materials and methods of the older, established companies. He discovered that old techniques produced old pastels that were no better than the products currently available. To make a better pastel, it would be necessary to use materials, techniques, and equipment not available to the earlier manufacturers. After an extensive search and much trial and error, the right combination of ingredients and methods was discovered. Today Great American ART WORKS pastels are recognized internationally as the new standard of excellence. They are available in 468 colors and at a lower price than the formerly premium brands.

Amate Bark Paper from Mexico - Lace Amarillo Yellow 15.5x23 Inch Sheet
The word amate derives from amatl, the Nahuatl word for paper. Mayan and Aztec Indians painted on amate paper to create codices (accordion folded books) depicting stories, historical events and even astrology. The Otomi people still use amate paper today for creating cutout figures for religious ceremonies while other village artisans use it for Mexican folk art depicting colorful urban scenes, festivals and celebrations. The paper is created from the bark of the amate wild fig tree (xalama), the nettle tree (jonote), and mulberry (moral). Each type of bark produces a different tone of color, ranging from coffee browns to silvery whites. The pulp from these barks are often combined to produce a swirling marble effect. The artisans first wash the bark, then boil it in a solution of lime juice for several hours, and lay strips on a wooden board. They beat the strips until they fuse together to form the desired texture, then dry them in the sun. This acid free paper is a wonderful choice for use in fine art including painting, ink and pastel drawings, crafts, invitations, cards, decoration and bookbinding.
